Colonoscopy is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel (intestines) with a small camera on a flexible tube. It can provide a visual diagnosis and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected colorectal cancer lesions or polyps. Once polyps are removed they are pathologically tested to determine if they are benign or precancerous.
Our General Surgeons also perform EGDs. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a test to examine the lining of the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), as well as the stomach and first part of the small intestine. It is done with a small camera (flexible endoscope) that is inserted down the throat.
